Morrisons is fastest growing UK supermarket
Sainsbury’s market share still slipping
August 30 2003
Morrisons is the fastest growing of the major UK supermarkets, growing sales by 9.9 per cent in July according to the latest figures from Taylor Nelson Sofres.
Sainsbury’s, which has slipped into third place behind Asda in terms of total market share, is still seeing its share decline according to the TNS data, while Asda continues its growth.
Sainsbury’s is still ahead of Asda in food sales, but in terms of total sales has about 16 per cent of the market, compared to Asda on 17 per cent.
Tesco, which has just announced a new round of price cuts, has just a market of more than 27 per cent and continues to increase.
Safeway saw its growth rate fall decline by 0.8 per cent, reflecting the ongoing uncertainty over it future.
Morrisons 9.9 per cent indicates that its low price strategy is continuing to attract new customers. That bodes well for the Bradford-based chain if, as tipped, it is given the go-ahead to acquire the majority of Safeway stores.
