Morrisons acquires factory for seafood processing
Morrisons has acquired a food factory in Grimsby as part of plans to launch its own seafood processing business.
The factory is expected to create between 250 and 300 jobs with seafood processing expected to start by the end of this year. It will fillet and portion up to 10,000 tons of fish and seafood products per year sourcing some produce from the nearby Grimsby Fish Market.
In January Morrisons appointed former Young’s executive Frank Green as head of seafood trading as the supermarket looks to produce more of the food sold in its stores.
Chief executive Dalton Philips said none of Morrisons rivals were buying direct from the quayside. He added: “Building this seafood business will allow us to move our fish from ‘catch to kitchen’ even more quickly, giving our customers fantastic quality seafood products at stunning prices.”
