Monday snapshot: other news in brief

Other latest news in brief on Dixons Carphone, Dream Doors and MySupermarket.co.uk…

Dixons Carphone has reached an agreement with Hutchison Whampoa, the owner of mobile network Three, to launch mobile services.

In addition, customers who buy connected devices such as laptops, tablets and home appliances from the electricals retailer will be able to take out a contract at the same time.

Carphone Warehouse chief executive Graham Stapleton told the Financial Times that the company will offer a more personalised service that will allow customers to tailor their price, minutes and data.

The Dream Doors kitchen makeover franchise has launched its 50th UK showroom with the opening of a new retail showroom in Kempston in Bedfordshire.

Dream Doors’ turnover in 2014 topped £20 million for the first time with the average turnover per franchise increasing by 20% year-on-year.

Dream Doors managing director Troy Tappenden said: “People love their kitchens, but many consumers just don’t want to spend tens of thousands on a re-fit and put up with the weeks of disruption it causes.  That’s why our franchisees are doing so well, filling a market need that exists from Aberdeen down to Cornwall and at all points in between. We have a number of other showroom launches over the coming months and will be looking to open our 60th showroom by the end of 2015.”

Mysupermarket.co.uk, the independent shopping and comparison website, has launched the MySupermarket Groceries Tracker which looks at the price of a weekly grocery shop.

Each month, the tracker will cover the same 35 most commonly purchased products from Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Ocado, Waitrose and Morrisons with 5,000 products tracked in total.

MySupermarket said its findings show that a shopping basket in January 2015 cost £88.13, which represented a 2.33% drop compared to December 2014 when the same basket cost £90.24. Compared to January 2014, the cost of a weekly shop was 5.9% lower in January 2015.

Products that were found to have increased the most in the past month were cola drinks (brand and own brand, up 3.25%), squash drinks (up 2.18%), cucumbers (up 2%) and carrots (up 1%). The products that dropped the most in price were broccoli (down 15%), grapes, (down 14.5%), potatoes (down 11.33%) and eggs (down 7.7%).
