Merger of Midlands and Anglia Co-ops given green light by members

The merger of Midlands Co-operative and Anglia Co-operative has been approved by members.

The move was given the thumbs up at two meetings this month at which Anglia members voted overwhelmingly for a transfer of engagements to the Midlands Co-operative Society. This means that the legal merger of the two societies can now take place in early December.

The merger will create one of the largest societies in the UK, with projected sales of £1 billion, 330,000 regular trading members, and more than 500,000 weekly customers across 16 counties.

Midlands Co-operative said in statement: “The legal formation of the merger will bring together the strengths of each organisation. It marks the end of months of planning and collaboration between the two Societies, and the start of a new period of opportunity and growth.”

Progress is now underway to adopt a new name for the merged society which will be chosen with the input of staff and members before the end of the year.
