Matalan struggles in tough market

In the 9 week period to 1st July, like for like sales were down 1.1 per centand total sales for the period have declined by 0.5 per cent.

Matalan said it continues to improve overall gross margins, which have increased by 0.4 per cent in the year to date. Its clothing market share remains at 3 per cent due to improved ranges and better marketing.
Chief Executive John King said, “Whilst we are encouraged by improvements being made across the business, we continue to trade in a difficult marketplace and are planning accordingly.”
