Marks & Spencer hires Justin King as non-exec director

Former Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King has been appointed as a non-executive director at Marks & Spencer.

Due to take up his position on 1 January, King will also join the retailer’s nomination committee.

King was chief executive of Sainsbury’s for over ten years until he stood down in 2014. Prior to that he worked on the development of the Simply Food offering at M&S and was previously one of the leadership team responsible for the turnaround of the Asda supermarket chain.

Steve Rowe, M&S chief executive, said: “I am delighted that Justin has agreed to join us. As we navigate the challenges ahead it will be enormously helpful to have his experience, wisdom and insight on the board. Many colleagues remember his time at M&S and will warmly welcome him back.”

Archie Norman, M&S chairman, added: “Justin’s appointment completes a very significant reorientation of the board in the last year. He will be a great addition to a strong team.”
