January 6 2004
Customers stocking up for Christmas boosted seasonal sales at wine-by-the-case retailer Majestic Wine.
Like-for-like UK sales were up 7.4 per cent in the eight weeks from November 6 to December 31. The company operates around 115 stores, including three in France catering to the cross-channel trade.
Majestic Wine chief executive Tim How said: “We are very pleased with our sales performance over the Christmas period. Wines from Bordeaux, Loire, Southern France, South Africa, New Zealand and Chile sold particularly well and Champagne and beer sales grew strongly.
“We continue to see a most encouraging increase in the number of customers on our database who have made purchases in the last twelve months, up by 10.1 per cent on this time last year to 320,000 customers.”
