Local shops in South West & Wales lead way on community engagement

A new survey has shown that convenience store owners are going the extra mile in their communities to support local projects and raise money for charities.

Results from the Association of Convenience Stores Voice of Local Shops Survey has revealed that 80% of store owners are involved in their community in some way, with 71% collecting for a local or national charity and 25% providing sponsorship for local schools and sports teams.

The survey, which polled over 1,100 independent retailers across the UK, also found a number of regional  variations.

In the South West and Wales, 86% of independent retailers said they had undertaken some form of community engagement activity in the past year compared to 60% of London retailers.  North West retailers were found to be the most charitable with 81% having collected money for a local or national charity, while retailers in Yorkshire and the Humber were most likely to sponsor a local sports team.

ACS chief executive James Lowman said: “Convenience stores are under increasing pressure from multiple chains to find a unique selling point that separates them from the competition. Many independent retailers have capitalized on the essential role they play in their communities. Being part of the community is one of the main reasons independent retailers love what they do and it’s great to see retailers in Wales and the South West leading the way.”
