Lidl to create 1,000 UK jobs in 2013

Lidl is to create 1,000 new jobs in the UK as part of a multi-million pound investment which will see it open 35-50 new stores in 2013.

The supermarket said it will be hiring across all parts of the business, from store managers to store assistants. Lidl currently has 600 stores across England, Scotland and Wales and employs over 11,000 staff.

In the 12 weeks to 23 December, Lidl UK increased its sales by 10.8% while growing its market share by 0.2 percentage points to 2.8%. Lidl has attributed much of its success to its Deluxe range which has seen sales increases of 200% year-on-year. The supermarket said it believed that the range had attracted “a more affluent shopper” to its stores.

Lidl said festive sales were “particularly strong” in 2012 with its own label Comte de Brismand champagne and Norwegian smoked salmon among the best-selling products.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Lidl spokesperson Georgina O’Donnell added: “Consumers are drawn to Lidl for its premium quality products at low prices but are encouraged to return when they realise they can do their entire weekly shop for a great deal less money than at other supermarkets.

“We’re looking forward to bringing our stores to more towns and cities around the country and are encouraged by the recent sales results demonstrating that Lidl has become more and more relevant to British consumers today.”
