Lidl customers demand caviar
Discount supermarket Lidl has doubled its stock of Icelandic black caviar after sales almost quadrupled at Christmas.
Lidl took the decision to increase stocks in time for Easter after the product became a best seller over the Christmas trading period with sales soaring by 171%.
The retailer is now selling Icelandic Black Caviar as part of its De Luxe range of Easter delicacies that includes Sea Bass, and Beef Wellington and Scallops.
The caviar comes from capelin, a small forage fish found in the Arctic. Retailing at £1.49 for a 100g pot, it is a fraction of the price of traditional caviar which comes from the endangered sturgeon.
Never Miss a Retail Update!Lidl, which launched its DeLuxe range four years ago, is looking to expand the range as it targets affluent shoppers looking for luxury food products at discounted prices.
Lidl spokesperson Georgina O’Donnell said: “We are looking at a wider range of products to add to our existing Deluxe range because it’s been such a huge hit with customers. Most of us are feeling the pinch of the recession now, but at least this gives you the opportunity to still enjoy high quality food while sticking steadfastly to your monthly budget.”
