Levi Strauss expands clothing recycling scheme to all US stores
Levi Strauss is extending its clothing recycling initiative to all of its US mainline and outlet stores as it looks to help customers cut down on waste.
Customers who drop-off any brand of clean, dry clothing or shoes in the collection boxes at their local Levi’s store will receive a voucher for 20% off a single, full-price item in-store.
Levi Strauss said the move is in support of its new Friday Fashion Exchange events that invite women to try on the new collection and bring their “gently” worn jeans for recycling. The events are being held every Friday in US mainline stores until 28 August and women who recycle their clothing at an event receive a voucher for $10 off their purchase of any item from the new women’s denim collection.
Michael Kobori, vice president of sustainability at Levi Strauss & Co, said: “We’re thinking about sustainability across all facets of our business and how to shift consumer behaviour to make recycling clothing the norm.
“As an industry leader, we consider all phases of our product lifecycle, including stages beyond our direct control like the product’s end point. Collecting used clothing at our stores makes it simple and easy for consumers to do their part and builds upon our commitment to do the right thing for the environment.”
The move is part of Levi Strauss’s broader sustainability initiatives that have included the Wellthread pilot where its designers created a 100% recyclable product from cotton. The company has also made strides in reducing its water usage, saving more than 1 billion litres of water through its WaterLess finishing process for jeans.
