John Lewis weekly sales up 6% in cold spell

John Lewis saw a 6% uplift in sales in the week ending 4 February compared to the same week last year.

Electricals and home technology achieved a double-digit increase at 10.8%. The star performers within the directorate were IT with sales up 61.2% and consumer electronic accessories, up 31.4%. Sales of televisions were also strong, up 13.7%, as customers ensured that they were ready for the digital  switchover in London and the South East.

Fashion sales saw an 8.2% increase as shoppers bought warm clothing during the cold snap. The best performer was men’s accessories with growth of 38% followed by fashion accessories, up 27.4%.

Home sales were up a modest 1.2% on last year helped by an 10.2% increase in sales of bedding as the cold weather encouraged customers to buy new duvets.

Online sales continued to perform well with an increase of 28.5% on last year and growth across all the directorates.

The Croydon, Poole and Southampton stores achieved the biggest increases on the same week last year with growth of 19.1%, 17.4% and 13.1% respectively.
