John Lewis weekly sales up 5.8%
John Lewis saw sales rise by 5.8% in the week ending 10 September. The department store chain said trading in the early part of the week had been particularly strong driven by a late surge in sales of ‘Back to School’ items and a price matching initiative.
Oxford Street and Edinburgh were the top performing stores with sales up by 9.9% and 9.4% respectively. The worst performing stores were those undergoing refurbishment.
Online sales at johnlewis.com were up 36% with strong growth seen across all departments. Fashion sales were up 7% boosted by a strong performance in childrenswear. Within the Home directorate, home accessories and gifts continued to sell well contributing to growth of 7.4%. Electricals and Home Technology sales were up 2.4% as the directorate benefited from an increase in sales of accessories, particularly laptop and tablet bags and cases.
John Lewis said the partnership had been focussed on the opening of the new Westfield Stratford City store during the week. Chris Hooper, head of operational support at John Lewis said: “Tuesday’s opening marked the end (or perhaps not quite!) of a huge and truly successful effort from many Partners across the division. I’m pretty sure they will be pleased with their work.”
