GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis weekly sales up 4.3%

John Lewis has reported that its sales rose 4.3% last week as the retailer benefited from the launch of the new Windows 8 operating system.

Electricals and home technology sales increased by 10.5% in the week, driven by strong trade in white goods and TVs, and a “superb start” for sales of the new Windows 8 ranges.

Fashion sales rose 3.9% as women’s and men’s branded casualwear sold “considerably” ahead of last year. Own-brand cashmere ranges also performed well as did brands such as Barbour, Joules and Seasalt.

Sales within the Home directorate edged up 0.6%. Lighting sales increased by 10% as a buying guide attached to the Sunday Times boosted trade. Sales of bedcovers rose 154% in response to a duvet and pillow promotion.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

While the retailer’s new shop in Exeter continued to perform ahead of expectations, the majority of shops recorded declines as they struggled against tough comparatives on the same week last year when it was half term.

Online sales remained strong with sales climbing by 39%.

Looking ahead, Ed Connolly, buying director for EHT, said:  With further technology launches in EHT to come, the prospect of colder weather on the horizon and our shops, online presentation and assortments in such good shape, we have every opportunity to break records as we head towards peak.”
