GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis weekly sales up 4.3%

John Lewis saw its weekly sales increase slow last week as the warm weather at the end of the week led to a drop in footfall.

In the week ending 7 September sales were up 4.3% on the same week last year compared to an increase of 15.3% the week before.

However, seven branches managed to buck the trend with Norwich, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Croydon, Tunbridge Wells, Poole and Cheadle all managing to cross the line. Online sales at johnlewis.com were also strong, up 25% year-on-year.

Despite the lower footfall, the final week of the Paralympic Games delivered a good week-on-week increase in London 2012 merchandise.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

In fashion, sales were down by 2.4% although the launch of the new Alice Temperley ‘Somerset’ range exceeded expectations with “massive traffic” online both to look and make purchases. There were also strong sales in Back to School clothing.

The new ‘House’ range beat its target and helped to increase the Home directorate’s sales by 3% while in the Electricals and Home Technology sales rose 16.4% driven by  communication technology products and white goods.

Yesterday John Lewis announced almost a 60% rise in half year profits.
