John Lewis weekly sales up 4%

John Lewis saw its weekly sales rise by 4% in the week ending 22 October as all buying directorates achieved an increase on the same week last year.

The Home directorate saw its second best increase of the half with sales up 2.3%. Fashion sales were up 5% driven by growth from childrenswear and womenswear.  Electricals and home technology put in a strong performance with white goods, computers and the retailer’s own brand audio ranges selling well.

Online sales were slightly softer than last week rising by 21.8%. Of the branches, Poole, Leicester and Kingston achieved the highest increases for the week with sales up 8.2%, 7.6% and 3% respectively.

The retailer said it saw a growing demand for toys in the week as parents began buying presents for Christmas.

Ed Connolly,  buying director for Electricals and Home Technology commented: “Big numbers against us this week must provide impetus for us to really go after every sale. It’s half term week so we must capitalise on our biggest opportunity yet to capture sales and really build momentum towards peak.”
