GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis weekly sales up 2.6%

John Lewis said its weekly sales were up 2.6% for the week ending 20 August as the UK returned to post-unrest normality.

Helping to drive this growth was the Oxford Street store with sales up 5.2% on the same week last year, closely followed by  Glasgow at 4.7% and Solihull at 4.6%.

Also key was the performance of John Lewis online which saw growth of 33%. Multi-channel sales made a positive contribution to the online result with PACT sales and Click & Collect both strongly up on the year.

Fashion sales were up 4% although Home sales were down 2% on the prior year.  Electricals and Home Technology had a strong week, up 8% on 2010 supported by strong IT sales.

Simon Williams, head of corporate sales at John Lewis commented:  “Although it sometimes seems there is uncertainty everywhere from the weather to the global financial markets, what is constant is the determination of Partners across the business to give great service and secure every possible sale and the result for week 3 of the second half again reflects that determination.”
