John Lewis weekly sales up 18.7%

John Lewis said its weekly sales increased by 18.7% last week as the retailer enjoyed a strong end to its clearance sale.

In the week ending 12 January, Electricals and Home Technology was the best performing category with sales rising by 34.7% driven by strong sales of imaging.

Fashion sales increased by 7.6% with handbags selling particularly well.

Home sales saw an uplift of 12.1% boosted by an increase in sales of textiles and carpets as the clearance sale drew to an end.

Online sales at johnlewis.com rose by 38.6%. In the stores, six branches delivered double-digit increases with Swindon achieving the highest uplift of 29.3% followed by Milton Keynes at 25.2%. Catering was up 8% and Foodhall sales up by 4%.

Commenting on the week’s sales Nat Wakely, director of selling operations, region A, said: “It was great to see such a week when everything came together so well, but I sit here typing knowing that snow is on its way… Hopefully we and our customers will navigate it safely and successfully towards the end of our financial year.”
