GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis weekly sales up 18.3%

John Lewis enjoyed another week of strong trading last week as the wet weather contributed to an 18.3% rise in sales compared to the same week last year.

In the week ending 5 May, all three of the department store’s directorates traded ahead of last year with the strongest result coming from electricals and home technology where sales were up 47.2%.

Home delivered a 14.1% increase where subdued sales of outdoor living products were offset by strong bedroom and upholstery sales.

Although slower, fashion traded ahead of last year with sales up 4.6% as the wet weather resulted in outerwear and umbrellas outselling the more seasonal sunglasses and sandals.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Online trading continued its strong performance with a 61% increase on the same week last year.

Of the stores, Poole and Swindon achieved the highest uplifts of 35.9% and 23.5% respectively. Matt McCormack, head of buying, menswear and sports, said: “Particular mention must go to the At Home stores for their continued strong performance and to catering for an 18% up lift on last year.”
