GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis weekly sales up 14.2%

Sales at John Lewis rose 14.2% in the week ending 22 September as the retailer benefited from a 48% increase in sales of food mixers fuelled by the Great British Bake Off TV programme.

John Lewis said all three of its directorates saw improvements in sales compared to the same week last year while online sales increased by 39.8%.

Electrical and home technology sales rose 24.4% in the week driven by strong sales of iPads, small electrical items, televisions and food mixers.

The first signs of autumn helped fashion to deliver 13.9% growth on the same week last year. The exclusive ‘Somerset’ by Alice Temperley range once again attracted customers with new lines due to be launched in the coming weeks. The retailer also benefited from continuing back to school trade with sales of children’s clothing up 17.1%.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Home sales rose by 7.1% in the week as the new ‘House by John Lewis’ range continued to increase in popularity with 7% growth week-on-week.

John Lewis said the majority of its stores achieved sales increases on last year with recently refurbished branches such as Norwich and Reading performing particularly well.

Uptake of the retailer’s Click & Collect service continued to grow with collections from both John Lewis and Waitrose branches up on last year.

Looking ahead, Karen Dracou, head of omni-channel development at John Lewis, said: “On a final note, the most popular search on johnlewis.com last week was for ‘Christmas’, so customer demand for festive products is clearly on the increase.”
