John Lewis weekly sales up 14.2%

John Lewis said last week delivered the best rise in sales of the new half with a 14.2% increase on the same week last year.

Of the five shops with double-figure gains, the top three were Poole, up 36.7%, Sheffield, up 17.5% and Southampton up 16.4%. Customer catering also had a good week delivering a 7.4% increase on the previous year.

All three buying directorates saw increases on last year with the best coming from Electricals and Home Technology where sales rose 20.6%.

Fashion sales were up 17.5% driven by the milder weather, spring colours and the launch of new ranges in store.

In the Home directorate, sales increased 7.8% on last year with good results coming from furniture where sales rose 6.4%. Cooking and dining items also sold well with a 12.5% increase.

Sales of home accessories and gifts were up by 16.9% helped by the imminent approach of Mother’s Day and Easter. 

Online sales at johnlewis.com were strong with a 37.5% increase on last year.
