GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis weekly sales rise 2.4%

Sales at John Lewis rose by 2.4% last week as price matching initiatives and the warm weather helped to boost sales.

The Electricals and Home Technology directorate saw sales increase by 23.9% driven by a 41% rise in sales of televisions due to the Digital Switchover.

Home sales fell 6.3% as the earlier Mother’s Day this year impacted sales especially in accessories and gifts. However, furniture had a stronger week as the warm weather drove sales of garden furniture and barbecues.

Fashion sales dropped by 2.2%.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Online sales at johnlewis.com rose by 37% in the week and accounted for over a quarter of all John Lewis sales for the first time this year. The website also saw its busiest trading day of the year on Monday.

Jonathon Brown Head of Online at John Lewis said: “The focus is now on making sure we capitalise on the outstanding assortment we have in shops and online, and the fantastic range of promotions and activities we have planned for this Easter weekend.”
