GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis weekly sales fall 3.4%

John Lewis saw sales fall by 3.4% last week. However, the department store said that when taking into account the earlier start of the clearance sale this year, the underlying picture was much stronger with sales rising 9% year-on-year across the first 10 days of Clearance.

Sales at johnlewis.com were up 19% on the year with electrical and home technology products performing well.  John Lewis said it was pleased to see strength coming through in big ticket items.

Fashion slipped back from its leading position last week, down 5.2%. However, John Lewis said it still delivered an 8% year-on-year increase across Clearance as a whole.

No branches generated any sales increases during the week but throughout the 10 days of Clearance, 14 branches were up, with Cambridge, Cardiff and Solihull leading.

Electricals and home technology buying director Robbie Feather commented: “Looking forward, the market looks challenging but all indicators suggest we will continue to outperform our competition across all three Directorates.”
