John Lewis weekly sales boosted by Olympics

John Lewis saw its weekly sales rise by 14.9% last week as the final week of the London 2012 Olympic Games helped drive sales of merchandise.

In the week ending 11 August, 18 of the department store’s branches achieved increases on the same week last year with Croydon, Oxford Street and Leicester topping the table with sales up 50%, 18.9% and 13.4% respectively.

While online sales Jl.com achieved a 36.4% increase on last year, there were also solid performances from all three of the retailer’s directorates.

Sales in the electricals and home technology  directorate were up 22.2% in the week, driven by strong sales of telecoms, consumer electronic accessories and large electricals.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Fashion sales rose 18.9% helped by a 177.7% uplift in sales of sportswear as customers bought London 2012 merchandise.

The Home directorate delivered a 7% increase on last year as a slight improvement in the weather boosted sales of outdoor living products.

David Barford, the director of selling operations for region B at John Lewis, said: “We have had a really positive response from our customers on new ranges so with the weather more mixed this week, I think we can look forward to another strong week of trade.”
