John Lewis sees quieter trading in last week of financial year

John Lewis experienced quieter trade last week against a backdrop of changeable weather. Total sales edged up 0.6% year-on-year while online sales climbed by 6.4%.

Sales at the shops were down overall, but the Heathrow, York and Exeter branches delivered strong increases of 24.4%, 11.5% and 9.3% respectively.

At a directorate level, home sales rose by 2.9% with uplifts across all product categories although home accessories achieved the biggest year-on-year growth.

Electricals and home technology sales were up 1.7% boosted by buoyant trade in the communication technology category.

Fashion sales fell by 2.3% despite a stand-out performance in beauty, wellbeing and leisure as customers were inspired by the retailer’s Re:new All campaign.
