John Lewis sales up 9.9% last week

John Lewis increased its sales by 9.9% year-on-year last week as the retailer price matched a competitor’s promotional activity.

Electricals and home technology had a strong week with sales up 13% on the year. Within this, the communication technology category was one of the best performers driven by buoyant sales in tablets and computers. Large electricals also achieved a strong increase.

Home sales rose by 9.4% boosted by a 21.7% uplift in furniture sales. With the weather improving slightly over the weekend, outdoor living sales rose by 6.2%. Gift food and wall decor also performed well with sales up 14.6% and 14.4% respectively.

Fashion sales finished the week with an increase of 8.9% on last year. Womenswear sales climbed by 12.2% although it was a week of two halves with cold weather products selling well at the beginning of the week and summer ranges doing better over the weekend.
