John Lewis sales up 9.3% last week

John Lewis saw its trade start to build towards the Easter peak last week as sales rose 9.3% year-on-year.

Trade was also boosted by an exceptionally strong Saturday when sales grew by 17.8% on the same day last year.

In a week which included a visit by the Prime Minister to a John Lewis shop in the North West, the Oxford Street and Peter Jones stores in central London posted double-digit growth while the Swindon and Tamworth shops also performed well.

Online sales delivered growth of 24.6% with Click & Collect accounting for over a third of all online trade.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Within the home directorate, sales increased by 9.8% boosted by a good performance in big-ticket items, particularly in beds and fitted furniture. In addition, demand for confectionery and gifting lines started to build momentum as the retailer moved towards the peak Easter trading period.

Fashion sales grew by 9.4% as customers bought seasonal items from John Lewis own-brand womenswear and accessory ranges.

Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales climbed by 8.8%, with trade dominated by audio and large electrical goods as well as electrical accessories.

Mark Blundell, head of retail change at John Lewis, said: “Some extreme weather – including smog and Saharan sand – weekend sporting events and a branch visit from the Prime Minister was the backdrop to a strong week’s sales.

“Looking ahead, we have some fantastic opportunities as the schools break up for Easter and with the promise of good weather we are well set to deliver with our seasonal fashion and outdoor living ranges.”
