John Lewis sales up 8.8% last week
John Lewis saw its sales rise by 8.8% year-on-year last week as good weather and a price matching initiative helped to drive footfall in stores and an increase in traffic online.
Fashion sales were 13.9% up on the same week last year with beauty and women’s accessories putting in a good performance on the back of strong trade in women’s shoes and premium beauty.

Electricals and home technology sales rose 11.7%, with the impetus coming from a number of areas including imaging and large and small electrical products.
Never Miss a Retail Update! In the shops, trade was strong with Tamworth achieving the highest increase on the same week last year as sales rose by 16.5% boosted by buoyant furniture sales. The Glasgow and Leicester stores also performed well with sales up by 15.1% and 11.5% respectively.
Online sales at johnlewis.com rose by 22.9%.
Maggie Porteous, director of selling, North and New Format at John Lewis, said: “The weather last week was neither too hot nor too cold, and that coupled with the fact that we were price matching a competitor’s promotional event gave us some good footfall in the shops and a strong increase in traffic online.
“And the signs are looking strong for this week. We have some fabulous assortments which are being strongly promoted in our shops, and our customers will be wanting to get ready for the bank holiday, and for some the half term break.”
