GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 6.1% last week

John Lewis grew its sales by 6.1% year-on-year last week with all the main sales directorates achieving an increase.

Electricals and home technology had the highest sales growth at 9.2% as trade was boosted by a strong performance in the communication technology category. There were also increases in the connected home and tablet and computer categories where sales rose by 14% and 13.2% respectively.

Home sales grew by 5% driven by buoyant sales in furniture, particularly beds and bedroom. The improving weather drove sales of outdoor living product sales which increased by 11.9%.

Fashion sales finished the week 4.7% up as customers took advantage of a competitor’s promotion being price matched.
