GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 6.1% last week

John Lewis grew its sales by 6.1% year-on-year last week despite the blustery weather that arrived towards the weekend.

Fashion had a solid week with sales rising by 6.1%. The best performing categories included fashion accessories and beauty and there was strong demand for a number of new beauty brands launched online.

Electrical and home technology sales increased by 3.5% driven by buoyant trade in fridges. Sales in the home directorate climbed by 9.6% as trade was boosted by a 20% uplift in furniture and 23% growth in beds.

Looking at the shops, High Wycombe once again achieved the highest percentage increase with sales rising by 24.8%. The Southampton store also put in a strong performance as did the smaller ‘At Home’ shops in Ipswich, Tunbridge Wells and Chichester.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Online sales grew by 20.2% helped by high demand for fashion and home lines.

Simon Russell, director of operations development at John Lewis, said: “We enjoyed a steady week’s trade, up 6.1%, as many customers braved hurricane Bertha to carry on as normal.

“Click & collect once again proved particularly popular with customers and we’re very excited to be able to extend this service to an additional 90 Waitrose branches over the next few weeks, offering it in almost all branches.”
