GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 4% last week

John Lewis grew its sales by 4% year-on-year last week as the weather continued to influence when customers shopped and what they bought.

All three product areas saw a climb in sales with electricals and home technology achieving the biggest percentage increase at 8%. Wearable technology was the runaway winner in this category with sales climbing by 352%.

Home sales rose by 2.9% as the warmer drove sales of outdoor living products and low tog duvets.

Meanwhile, fashion finished the week 2.2% up despite going up against a week last year that featured price matching against a number of competitor promotions. Childrenswear performed particularly strongly with sales climbing by 29%.
