GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 3.4% last week

John Lewis increased its sales by 3.4% year-on-year last week as trade was boosted by strong uplifts in the fashion and electricals and home technology categories.

Fashion sales climbed by 7.9% following good performances in women’s accessories, swimwear and nightwear. There were also buoyant sales in menswear which finished the week up 8.1% on last year.

Electricals and home technology sales rose by 10.5% with the best performances coming from communication technology and small electrical products. Audio and connected home also fared well, with sales increasing by 7%.

It was a tougher week for the home category where sales were 7.2% down on last year. John Lewis said customers were less inclined to think about big ticket items for the home due to the warmer weather. However, the sunshine had a positive effect for outdoor living products which saw a 41.5% increase in sales.
