GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 2.1% last week

Sales at the John Lewis department store chain rose by 2.1% year-on-year last week as the summer clearance sale continued to attract customers to its shops.

The retailer said the cooler weather also played a part, with last week competing with 35°C temperatures during the same week in 2015.

Fashion sales edged up 3.8% boosted by strong uplifts in jewellery and men’s formalwear.

Home sales finished the week up 1.7% compared to last year. Some of the best performing areas included beds and bedroom furniture where sales increased by 15.5%.

Meanwhile, the launch of the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer bolstered electricals and home technology sales, although a slower week for small electricals meant that the category finished the week down 0.1%.
