John Lewis sales up 11.4% last week

John Lewis grew its sales by 11.4% year-on-year last week with both its shops and online posting solid increases.

In the shops the Newbury store posted the biggest percentage increase at 31.2% followed by High Wycombe, Ipswich and Poole.

Online sales rose by 32.6% with strong uplifts across all three of the retailer’s directorates.

In fashion sales grew by 7.9% boosted by a 22% increase in nursery sales. Fashion accessories and women’s shoes also scored good increases.

Home sales increased by 10.1% driven by a 17% rise in furniture sales. Textiles and carpets was another strong performer with a gain of 12%.

Electricals and home technology sales achieved an uplift of 16.7% helped by strong sales in small electricals particularly vacuum cleaners. Tablet and computing sales rose by 14% as trade was boosted by students preparing to go off to university.

Tim Harrison, director of store development at John Lewis, said: “Another strong week for John Lewis with sales up 11.4% on last year. Both shops and online had solid increases. With Christmas stock now coming in, we need to prepare for the upcoming peaks.”
