John Lewis sales up 1.6% last week

Sales at John Lewis edged up 1.6% year-on-year last week with trade strongest during the second half.

Home sales increased by 4.1% boosted by buoyant trade in the gift food, home and gift, and outdoor living categories.

Meanwhile, fashion sales rose by 1.8% with menswear and shoes achieving some of the best percentage increases.

Electricals and home technology fared less well with sales edging down 0.6%, although there were some strong individual performances from photo, printing and accessories. Large and small electricals achieved uplifts of 4.2% and 1% respectively.

Looking at the shops, the top performing store was Chichester with a rise of 24.1%, followed by Ashford, Exeter and Southampton.

Online sales climbed by 12.1%.

David Barford, John Lewis director of selling for London & South, said: “This week sees the run up to another bank holiday weekend where we are well placed to optimise customer experience opportunities across all of our shopping channels.”
