GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 1.3% last week

John Lewis increased its sales by 1.3% last week as cooler weather towards the end of the week prompted customers to return to the shops.

Electricals and home technology sales finished the week up 2% on the same period last year as the mobile phone and tablet categories benefited from the retailer’s three year guarantees. Audio and connected home products also had a strong week with sales rising by 15.7%.

Fashion sales increased by 1.2% as customers bought late summer items. Beauty counters also fared well with sales up 5.1%.

Home sales edged up 0.7% as outdoor living products saw a spike in popularity ahead of the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend. It was also a successful week for beds where sales were 30.8% up on the same week last year.
