John Lewis sales up 1.1% last week
A strong uplift in fashion sales helped John Lewis to increase its sales by 1.1% year-on-year last week as the warm weather boosted trade.
Sales in the fashion directorate surged by 18.5% on the same period last year with some of the best percentage increases coming from women’s accessories and beauty, womenswear, swimwear and nightwear.
Meanwhile, home sales rose by 4.1% year-on-year as outdoor furniture continued its strong run. Other categories performing well included beds, furniture and express curtains.
Electrical and home technology fared less well with sales falling by 16.5% year-on-year.
Shops achieving the highest percentage increases included Peter Jones and Stratford City. Online sales climbed by 10.9%.
Liz Mihell, John Lewis head of selling at Home, said: “The sun shone for much of the week with temperatures lifting across many parts of the country. This has had a positive effect on many areas of our sales.
“With the weather seemingly set to fair for the time being we have a fantastic opportunity to showcase summer. This weekend’s bank holiday will be the start of the summer for many and we are ready to make it easy and stylish for our customers.”
