John Lewis sales rise by a modest 2.8% last week
John Lewis has reported seeing a modest increase in sales last week despite footfall being impacted by a second week of unseasonably warm weather.
In the week ending 5 October, sales edged up 2.8% on the same period last year. The retailer’s autumn/winter ranges were affected most by the warmer weather although Christmas merchandise recorded double digit growth, while cooking and dining products also performed well.
Electrical and home technology sales rose by 15.1% boosted by strong sales of electrical appliances, laptop and desktop computers, and small electricals. Food preparation items also put in a good performance, helped by the popularity of the Great British Bake Off TV programme.
Fashion sales dropped by 4.9% as the warm weather discouraged customers from buying new autumn/winter clothing. Home sales fell by 0.3% despite a 15% increase in lighting sales.

Ed Connolly, buying director for EHT at John Lewis, said: “This week should see a turn in the weather and our business is in great operational shape to make the most of any delayed customer flow that this will bring.”
