John Lewis sales return to growth as summer heat eases

John Lewis saw it sales return to growth year-on-year last week as lower temperatures helped drive an increase in footfall and online sales.

In the week ending 27 July 2013, sales rose by 13% with all three trading directorates delivering positive increases both online and in-store.

Dino Rocos, operations director at John Lewis said: “Department stores in particular benefited from increased footfall, with catering and beauty sales, always a good indicator of the flow of customers, seeing increases of 10.8% and 8.1% respectively. This footfall delivered a year-on-year increase of 9.5% in department store sales with teams in Swindon, Milton Keynes and Cardiff all having good reason to be particularly pleased with their results.”

Online sales at Johnlewis.com also delivered a strong result, up 24.7% on the year, with all three directorates posting sales rises. Click & collect continued to support the growth with collections up 51% on last year’s total.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Within the trading directorates, the best week-on-week turnaround was within Home where total sales climbed 6.9% driven by buoyant sales of cooking and dining products.

Fashion sales saw an 8.5% uplift as customers continued to buy high summer lines as well investing in the new autumn/winter stock.

Electricals and home technology showed the biggest year-on-year growth, with sales up 24% in the week helped by strong sales of juicers and cameras.
