GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

John Lewis sales down 5.9% last week

John Lewis saw its sales drop by 5.9% year-on-year last week as the retailer battled against warmer weather and comparison with the run-up to the bank holiday weekend a year ago.

Fashion sales declined by 4.4% on last year although sales of summer lines continued to be strong across all categories.

Home sales fell by 2.7% despite some good results from the outdoor living category and strong interest from customers in the new season’s furniture and accessory ranges.

The electricals and home technology directorate had a “tough” week with sales dropping by 10.4%.

Online sales fared better with a sales uplift of 6.1%.

Liz Mihell, head of selling for At Home, John Lewis, said: “Looking ahead, there are clear opportunities this weekend in making the most of the bank holiday footfall and also the peak days of Back to School. We can be confident in and ambitious for our new season assortments. These are highlighted in the beautiful ‘a love of the new’ campaign which looks really compelling in the shops and online, too.”
