John Lewis sales down 1.6% last week

Sales at John Lewis slipped by 1.6% year-on-year last week after sales comparisons were distorted as the same week last year included both a Bank Holiday and half term holiday.

Fashion sales fell just short of last year, dropping by 0.7%, despite strong performances from women’s casualwear as the retailer price matched a competitor’s promotion.

Electricals and home technology sales fell by 1.2% although continued growth in mobile supported sales in the communication technology category which finished the week up 9.4% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, home sales declined by 2.4% despite a 4.1% uplift in the beds and bedroom category.

The week also saw the launch of the rooftop garden at the John Lewis Oxford Street store in London.
