John Lewis sales boosted by summer of sport

Sales at the John Lewis department store chain surged 32.4% in the week ending 28 April, boosted by sales of televisions in the run up to London 2012 and the UEFA football finals.

The Home directorate enjoyed a strong week with sales up 25% as big-ticket items such as beds and bedroom furniture, floor coverings and upholstery achieved double digit increases on sales in the same week last year.

Fashion saw an increase of 18.6% as sales of men’s outerwear rose significantly due to the inclement weather.

Electricals and Home Technology continued its strong run with a 62.6% rise on the same week last year. IT sales achieved treble-digit growth, while television sales continued to benefit from the Digital Switchover and the forthcoming Summer of Sport.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Of the stores, Croydon and Poole put in the best performances with sales up 57.3% and 56.7% respectively.

Commenting on the week’s sales Ed Connolly, buying director for electricals and home technology said: “A really pleasing set of results from retail, with all shops in positive figures and with strength in both regions, complemented by a great performance from at homes and our online business at +69.4% versus last year. So, overall a positive week.”
