John Lewis clearance boosts sales figures

John Lewis saw its clearance sale get off to a flying start last week with a 20% increase in sales on the same week last year.

Buying and brand director Peter Ruis said: “Starting online on Wednesday night and on Thursday in our shops has clearly paid dividends, with us trading +14% compared to the first four days of Clearance last year. All areas capitalised on the extra days and it’s been great to hear how much Partners have pulled together to deliver this result.”

Fashion sales were up 22% driven by a 42% increase in childrenswear
and 22% growth in accessories and beauty. Sales of electrical goods were up 17.6% and  IT was up 58%, driven by Special Buy laptops. Homewares increased by 20.5% due to a strong performance in textiles.

All John Lewis shops were ahead of last year with Cardiff, Leicester and Trafford performing particularly well, up 28%, 21%, and 18% respectively.

Johnlewis.com saw a 46% increase boosted by an 80% rise in fashion sales.

Ruis added: “Our Clearance marketing campaign will continue this week and having had a smooth operational performance, we should be hopeful of another strong week of trade.“
