John Lewis celebrates 17% rise in weekly sales

John Lewis, the employee-owned department store chain, enjoyed strong trade last week as its clearance sale helped to deliver a 17% increase in sales on the same week last year.

In the week ending 30 June, the second week of the retailer’s clearance sale, all three buying directorates achieved double-digit increases.

Electricals and Home Technology was the top performing directorate with an uplift of 30.8%. The retailer said that sales of TVs did not suffer after England’s exit from the European Championships, while sales of tablet computers and laptops continued to be strong.

Home delivered an increase of 11.9% driven by clearance offers. Sales of cooking and dining products were up 13% while home accessories and gift sales rose 23.2%.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

With the Olympic Games fast approaching, London 2012 merchandise helped Fashion to achieve a 12.8% increase on the same week last year while womenswear sales were up 14.8%.  Not surprisingly, the retailer sold a record number of umbrellas due to the continuing wet weather.

Of the stores Poole was the best performer with sales up 34.1% while online sales at johnlewis.com rose 28.4%.

Ed Connolly, buying director, EHT, John Lewis said: “The balance across retail was also very pleasing, with all our channels complementing one another’s growth and a positive figure online of +28.4% sitting alongside all but one of our LFL shops in positive figures, with 16 of them showing double-digit growth and excellent scores from the ‘at home’ format, too.”
