John Lewis brings Oculus Rift headset to the high street

John Lewis is expanding its range of virtual reality products with the UK launch of the Oculus Rift headset.

To be available in shops and online on 20 September, the product priced at £549 is the next generation in virtual reality.

Combining state of the art displays and optics with 360 degree sound, the device creates an immersive experience transporting users into their game or video. The retailer said the product is set to redefine digital entertainment and bring virtual reality mainstream.

From the beginning of September, John Lewis customers will be test the technology as part of demonstrations at the retailer’s flagship Oxford Street shop and twelve other shops across the country later in the month. This will include being able to play the game Lucky’s Tale, which is included with the purchase of the Oculus Rift device.

Will Jones, head of buying for electricals at John Lewis, said: “We are very excited to be launching Oculus Rift in the UK. We’ve seen interest in virtual reality rise dramatically in the last few months, with sales of the Samsung Gear VR, powered by Oculus, headset up 310% in the last six weeks alone. The Oculus Rift device is a significant progression in virtual reality technology, set to reinvent how we work and play, and we are proud to offer our customers the chance to experience it first.”
