John Lewis and M&S to open stores at Vangarde Monks Cross

John Lewis is to open a 100,000 sq ft department store at the new Vangarde Monks Cross development in York. The store will compliment a new 120,000 sq ft Marks & Spencer store as well as a further medium-size retail unit, smaller kiosks and restaurant units, and a range of community facilities.

Marks & Spencer, which will retain and invest in its store on Parliament Street in the city centre, said its new store will extend the local offer of clothing, home and gifts as well as provide an M&S Foodhall and an M&S Cafe.

Lawrence Earnshaw, senior director Out-of-Town Retail, CBRE, commented: “The delivery of retailers such as John Lewis and Marks and Spencer, will provide a much-needed and exciting addition to the city, significantly strengthening the retail offering for the people of York.  This significant investment will add to an increasingly strong retail market, not to mention the long-term future of York.”

The site will also provide community, healthcare, learning and play facilities, including a new 6,000-seat community stadium, on the site of the existing Huntington Stadium. This will be the new home to the recently promoted York City Football Club and York City Knights Rugby League Club.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Community facilities included in the development will consist of a range of hospital outpatient facilities, York St John University’s Institute for Community Sport & Wellbeing, an independent living assessment centre, a 3G floodlit games court, onsite conferencing and entertainment facilities and a new Explore Learning Centre.
