JD Sports fighting fit

Margin protected as group held off sale until Boxing day.

By Mark Higgins

Sales on a like for like basis for the five weeks to 3 January rose by 2.8 per cent, sports goods up 1 per cent and fashion by 12.5 per cent. The Group’s cumulative like for like sales for the 48 week period to 3 January 2009 were up 3.8 per cent (Sports Fascias up 3.1 per cent and Fashion Fascias up 8.0 per cent), with gross profit margins having improved marginally over the full period compared to the previous year.
‘The Board now believes that current market expectations for profit before tax and exceptional items will be marginally exceeded.’ the company said.
