Intu to roll out free phone charging across its shopping centres

Intu is to install free-to-use, secure, phone chargers at all of its UK shopping centres after a trial showed that the service increased customer dwell time.

Phone chargers provided by Chargebox were piloted at Intu’s Bromley, Merry Hill, Metrocentre and Trafford Centre shopping centres during November and December.

The company said feedback through its Tell Intu system was overwhelmingly positive and showed that customers carried on shopping or relaxed in a coffee shop while their phones charged, adding to dwell times for retailers and restaurants.

The move means that Intu will have the capacity to charge one million mobile phones per year across it 15 shopping centres with each charger box having a choice of connectors.

Roger Binks, customer experience director of Intu, said: “Phone chargers are the latest addition to the Intu signature customer experience programme. We have the most digitally connected shopping centres allowing customers to enjoy omni-channel shopping.”
