Home Depot workers reject union move
Detroit workers vote against representation
Home Depot workers at a store in Detroit have voted against union representation.
The rejection of unionisation is a setback for a campaign by the US labour movement to represent employees of major retailers including Home Depot and Wal-Mart.
The two day secret ballot saw Home Depot employees at the store in Harper Woods, Michigan, vote by 115 to 42 against joining the United Food and Commercial Workers.
The store would have been the first of Home Depot’s 1700-plus chain to have union representation.
The union said it had been contacted by store workers interested in joining, and expressing concerns about job security, pay and staffing levels and health-care costs.
Home Depot said the results represent a vote of confidence from its workers.
