Harrods back in fashion
Sales up as tourists return
February 6 2004
Upmarket department store Harrods has seen its sales recover as high spending tourists returned to London as fears over terrorism subsided.
The Knightsbridge store said that sales in the six months to the end of January were up 6.7 per cent in value terms compared to the same period a year earlier, when London was suffering from a dearth of high spending tourists in the wake of the September 11 attack on New York.
The company said luxury brands had sold well, and despite a generally tough market for the department store sector in the run-up to Christmas, insisted discounting had been limited to the January sale.
Chief executive Richard said: “The trading year included very uncertain times, but Harrods performed strongly.”
Harrods, which has lost a series of senior executives amid rumours of personality clashes with flamboyant owner Mohamed Al Fayed, is due to publish detailed results in May.
